About Yellow Jacket & European Wasps
Yellow jackets - known in Australia as European wasps - are social wasps with bright yellow and black bodies. They build large paper nests that are often hidden in the ground, inside wall cavities, in roof voids or in sheds, and their colonies can grow to thousands of wasps by late summer.
What Yellow Jacket & European Wasps Look Like
Look for a smooth, bright yellow-and-black body, black antennae, a narrow waist and wings folded lengthwise when at rest. They are roughly the size of a bee.
Nests and Life Cycle
A queen starts a nest in spring, and her workers expand it through summer. The nest is a paper structure with layers of comb enclosed in an outer envelope. Wasps feed on sweet drinks, fruit and meat scraps and may be drawn to picnics, bins and pet food.
