About Australian Native Paper Wasps
Australian native paper wasps are slender, long-legged wasps with brown, orange and yellow markings. They live in small social colonies and build open, umbrella-shaped nests from chewed plant fibre. You will often find them nesting under eaves, on pergola beams, in shrubs and on fences all around Australia.
What Australian Native Paper Wasps Look Like
Adults have a narrow waist, long dangling legs in flight and a smooth, lean body with yellow, orange and brown bands. They are smaller and less brightly marked than European wasps.
Nests and Life Cycle
A nest starts in spring when a queen builds a few cells and lays eggs. Her first workers help expand the comb through summer. The comb is open, so you can see the cells and the wasps on its surface. Colonies usually die off in cooler months, although young queens shelter through winter and start new nests the following spring.
Is It a Problem at Your Property?
Native paper wasps are usually not aggressive away from the nest, and they eat other creatures that chew garden plants. They become a problem when nests are built beside doors, clotheslines, letterboxes or play areas, because wasps defend the nest if it is disturbed.
